The largest grain cargo is being loaded at Muuga Harbour

Estonia’s leading agricultural company Baltic Agro is loading one of the largest grain shipments in history at Muuga Harbour. 75,000 tons of wheat grown in Estonia will soon arrive in Spain.

According to Timo Sildvee, product manager for grain trade at Baltic Agro, no more than 70,000 tonnes of wheat have left Estonia at one time in recent years. “This does not mean that our grain exports have decreased, rather this year is special in terms of large Panamax-type ships. At the beginning of the season, Baltic Agro loaded 66,000 tonnes of barley cargo, and in October, the three largest Estonian buyers, Baltic Agro, Kevili and Scandagra, together loaded 68,500 tonnes of wheat,” said Sildvee.

Baltic Agro has purchased a 75,000-ton, or nearly 2,600 truckloads, of wheat from Estonian farmers that will soon be set sail. “All of these thousands of tons of wheat have been delivered and stored at Muuga Grain Terminal this year. Although the ship is exceptionally large, thanks to the terminal’s capacity, it only takes 5-6 days to load it on days without rain,” added Sildvee.

Baltic Agro is one of Estonia’s largest grain and rapeseed buyers, cooperating with over 900 domestic grain growers.

In 2024, 462 thousand tons of wheat and a total of 710 thousand tons of cereals were exported from Estonia through Muuga Harbour. In the first 9 months of this year, 280 thousand tons of wheat, plus other cereals, have been handled by various cargo terminals at Muuga Harbour.
