On June 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and his wife Le Thi Bich Tran visited the Port of Tallinn as part of their official visit to Estonia.
During the visit, the Vietnam National Shipping Company (VIMC) and the Port of Tallinn signed a strategic cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening ties between the two countries in the development of the maritime and logistics sectors.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) provides for cooperation in the development of smart and environmentally sustainable ports, as well as in the promotion of technologies and innovation. The main areas of cooperation are:
- development of smart and automated port solutions,
- development of green energy and environmentally friendly infrastructure,
- integration of digitalized logistics connections,
- exchange of knowledge and best practices.
For Vietnam, cooperation with an Estonian partner means an opportunity to strengthen its role in the international logistics network and gain access to the European market through Tallinn. For Estonia, this agreement offers an opportunity to strengthen relations with Southeast Asia and expand its influence in the international logistics sector.
The diplomatic significance of Prime Minister Chinh’s visit to Estonia is part of a broader strategy to strengthen Vietnam’s relations with the Nordic and Baltic countries, focusing on areas such as digitalization, green development, education, and infrastructure cooperation. The agreement between VIMC and the Port of Tallinn is a concrete step in realizing these goals.
During his visit to Estonia, the Vietnamese Prime Minister met with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Speaker of the Riigikogu Lauri Hussar, and Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. He also visited various companies and participated in a business forum focusing on Estonian-Vietnamese digital cooperation.
