Baltic Sea Day is celebrated on August 27 in several countries bordering the Baltic Sea. In Estonia, activities are focused around the Tallinn Old City Harbour, the Estonian Maritime Museum, and the Viimsi Open Air Museum.
Baltic Sea Day is traditionally celebrated on the last Thursday of August in the countries bordering the Baltic Sea. The aim of Baltic Sea Day is to encourage people to pay attention to our unique sea, to learn about the diverse marine nature, culture and history, and to take concrete actions to protect the Baltic Sea.
Port of Tallinn and Green Marine invite you to a tour of the Old City Harbour on Baltic Sea Day on August 27 at 1:00 p.m. on the topic “How do we keep the Baltic Sea clean?”. The tour will take place in the Old City Harbour cruise area and at two cruise piers. The tour in Estonian lasts approximately 1 hour. A nearly 700-year-old Hanseatic ship, cog, is being conserved in a tent next to the Estonian Maritime Museum’s Seaplane Harbour. On Baltic Sea Day, Estonian and Finnish conservators will open the tent doors to the public and introduce the Hanseatic ship and their work. A four-member group is responsible for the ship’s conservation: Eero Ehanti and Heikki Häyhä from Finland and Estonian Maritime Museum archaeologists Priit Lätti and Lisette Reinvars. On Baltic Sea Day, three free excursions will be organized led by the conservators – in parallel in Estonian, English and, if necessary, Finnish. World Cleanup Day Estonia, the Government of Northern Tallinn, the Tallinn Environment and Municipalities Department and the City of Tallinn are organizing Baltic Sea Day cleanups on Pikakari Beach and the Paljassaare Peninsula, where everyone is welcome to join in, starting at 3 p.m. This will be followed by an environmental hike at 6 p.m., which will take participants to discover the nature of Paljassaare. The Estonian Maritime Museum introduces kindergarten children to the Baltic Sea, its unique features and environmental protection in a museum lesson. Tallink, together with Tallinn Voluntary Sea Rescue, organizes paid sea rescue trips in Tallinn Bay, the proceeds of which go to support the Tallinn Voluntary Sea Rescue NGO. Departures are made to Tallinn Bay every hour from 2 pm to 8 pm and various sea rescue activities are tried out.

The Baltic Sea Day cycling tour will head from Lennusadam to the Viimsi Open Air Museum. The start will be at the Seaplane Harbour parking lot next to the experience tent at 3:00 PM, but you can also join the tour elsewhere along the route. The tour will be at a leisurely pace, with stops along the way to listen to stories related to history and seafaring. English translation is also provided. The feature film “Karge Meri” (dir. Arvo Kruusement, 1981), based on the novel of the same name by August Gailit, can be watched for free at 7:30 PM in the roof garden of the Põhjala factory. The evening will continue with a free-form discussion evening on the topic of the Baltic Sea and its inhabitants, with the guest being seal researcher and marine biologist Ivar Jüssi.
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland will present the exhibition “Baltic Sea Fish” at the Kabli RMK Visitor Centre from 10 am to 6 pm. It consists of ceramic installations: “Baltic Sea Fish School”, “Baltic Sea Fish – the Daily Bread of Coastal Peoples” and “Baltic Sea Table”, as well as illustrations inspired by the Baltic Sea by Estonian artists.
Internationally, Baltic Sea Day is coordinated by the John Nurminen Foundation, which focuses on saving the sea. In Estonia, the celebration of Baltic Sea Day is coordinated by the Finnish Institute, this year the organizers include the embassies and cultural institutes of the Baltic Sea countries in cooperation with the Museum of Coastal People and the Estonian Maritime Museum.
