Port of Tallinn: Port of Tallinn joining GreenDice – a responsible step towards sustainability

The Port of Tallinn has taken the next important step towards achieving its sustainability goals by joining forces with GreenDice to valorize used IT equipment and promote responsible operations.

The decision of the Port of Tallinn to join GreenDice stems from similar values and sustainability goals. It is important for us to reduce the environmental impact of our activities. Electronic waste is the fastest growing type of waste in the world. In 2023 alone, we sent 700 kg of electronic waste for recycling at the Port of Tallinn – some of this equipment was technically in working order, but morally obsolete for us.

GreenDice allows us to improve the management of electronic waste by first directing end-of-life devices to communities for reuse after maintenance and then to efficient recycling. GreenDice also allows us to track the journey of devices from their use to the recycling of materials.

Cooperation with GreenDice will also help the Port of Tallinn fulfill its sustainability reporting obligations and strengthen its reputation as a responsible company, demonstrating its commitment to the green transition and social responsibility towards both local communities and international partners.

The Port of Tallinn has set ambitious goals for the development of environmentally friendly and sustainable operations. The company’s sustainable development strategy includes a wide range of green and circular economy principles, the implementation of which contributes to both maintaining the cleanliness of the Baltic Sea and the well-being of communities. One of the main goals of the Port of Tallinn is to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To achieve this, the focus is on CO2 emission-free solutions, including shore-based connections, which allow ships to reduce emissions and energy consumption while in port. To promote energy efficiency, renewable energy is used in the development of infrastructure, such as marine heating and solar energy systems in the new cruise terminal at the Old Port.

In implementing the principles of circular economy, the Port of Tallinn pays great attention to waste recycling, aiming to divert 70% of ship waste into the circular economy. Waste management processes are designed to minimize marine pollution and increase the efficient use of resources. In addition, the port manages projects that support waste reduction and material reuse in port areas.
